------------------
The Seminar was started with welcome address by Sri.A.S.Bhat, Managing Director-CAMPCO. Sri.Konkodi Padmanabha, Managing Trustee-ARDF & President-CAMPCO presided the Seminar.
President/Representatives of CAMPCO/MAMCOS/TSS/TUMCOS/APSCOS inaugurated the programme by lighting the traditional lamp. Sri.Konkodi Padmanabha in his key note address stated the necessity of mechanisation in Arecanut farming and processing in this computer age. The children of Arecanut farmers are migrating from villages to distant places in search of their livelihood. Farmers are facing labour problem in one or other way. At this juncture, farmers also feel the need for mechanization in day-today's life. Even though the Arecanut Machinery Fair arranged during the year 2009 was a success, the machine for peeling Arecanut in perfect condition has not yet developed. He said that, CAMPCO with the continuous effort of their Engineers has now developed a chali white Areca peeling machine which is being demonstrated at the Seminar and requested to observe the performance. CAMPCO & ARDF has taken various measures to facilitate the Arecanut farmers. To compute Areca production cost, the Expert Committee appointed during last year has been continued this year also. Efforts are being made to find out eco-friendly & better resistant chemicals (other than Bordo mixture) like Potassium Posponate to protect the Areca trees from Mahali disease. To have more research on the medicinal values of Arecanut, it has been decided to convene one day Conference of Ayurvedic Doctors/Experts at Swarnavalli Mutt, Sirsi during February 2012. Continuous efforts are being put by CAMPCO in stabilizing the rate of Arecanut and in safeguarding the interest of Areca growers.
Dr.Chandrashekar Chowta, Scientist & Progressive Farmer of Kasaragod in his speech stressed the necessity to stop migration of farmer's children which is a serious problem. Nowadays, life condition of agriculturists has changed a lot. Frequent power failure, lack of sufficient knowledge relating to seedlings, watering the plants, manuring, processing, storing, etc. also has the effect on Arecanut production. Weather conditions also has changed a lot. The wages demanded by the labourers is very high due to the risk involved in their work. He opinioned that these workers are to be considered as technical persons.
Sri.Padaru Ramakrishna Shastry, Progressive Farmer, stated that mechanisation is required in all fields of agriculture since technical skill is lowering and for one acre of Areca cultivation we need 152 labourers/year. He expressed that in foreign countries mechanization is applied in all fields by which 1/3rd of the labour expenses is being saved. He also opined that, apart from utilization of the machine, servicing of such machines also is very much important and the Engineering Colleges/I.T.I's should train up the students in this direction. Further, he suggested convening one or two days Training programme to enlighten the farmers.
Sri.K.M.Hegde, Progressive Farmer from Sirsi informed that, recently by using irrigation pipeline, the Areca plants are being manured and he stated the method should be followed in other areas also. Sri.Padre, Editor of Adike Patrike informed that CAMPCO has arranged this Seminar at the appropriate time. He enlightened that, for the first time using Indian organic Cocoa beans, Switzerland has manufactured chocolates which will be marketed shortly. He stressed the need of machines for intra transport in the forthcoming Machinery Fair which may be helpful for the farmers and also suggested imparting training to those interested to climb Areca trees. Sri.A.P.Nagesh Rao, Agali, Progressive Farmer also shared his experiences regarding intra transport and stated that he has seen one such machine of 4 HP diesel engine costing Rs.75,000/-. He further quoted that instead of spraying, why Areca trees should not be injected with chemicals and also sought better techniques in processing of red variety of Arecanut which is suitable to the growers. Sri.Srinivas Achar in his talk, expressed the concern about storage of Arecanut. He considered the necessity of having Areca mill, as in the case of paddy and also put forward the idea of giving awards to persons with innovative ideas. Sri.K.M.Subba Rao from Sringeri insisted for a separate Agricultural University for Malnad Region.
M/s V-Tech Engineers, Thirthahalli made presentation of their peeling & grading machine and informed that the grading machine will be ready for use during 2012.
Sri.Suresh Bhat, Director - Scientific & Techno Entrepreneur Innovation Programme, NITK-Suratkal, shown the slides relating to Arecanut tree climbing machine designed & developed by Sri.Govind Prasad, Me., and explained that, it will reduce the cost of labour. He invited persons with the new ideas to contact him for any assistance. They will support in developing their idea into business and help them in attaining patent including monetary support.
Sri.Jeevan Saldanha of M/s Spectrum Industries, Yeyyadi made his presentation on the machine relating to grading of Arecanut with size and colour and narrated its features.
Sri.Vinod of M/s Agrobot, Bangalore in his presentation on the Arecanut tree climbing and Peeling machine stated that the peeling machine works as a knife and there is no dust and also no damage being caused to Arecanut. According to him, Arecanut tree climbing machine can also be used for spraying Bordo mixture which will save the cost of the chemical mixture. The weight of the machine is said to be about 10 kgs.
Sri.Chandrashekar of M/s J.E.C Engineers, Tarikere in his presentation said that peeling machine developed is of 2 HP capacity and cost of the unit is Rs.2.5 lakhs. He also said about potassium posponate as a systemic & safe chemical which fights against diseases on Arecanut trees. He also recommended soil application of this chemical.
Sri.Suresh Bhandary, General Manager - CAMPCO in his presentation on the Areca peeling machine developed by CAMPCO explained that the system adopted is roping and the features are: can be used for dehusking of white variety of dried Areca at the cost of Re.0.84 per kg. 80% peeling will be done and small nuts should be adjusted to size. The power consumption is 1.3 units under single phase system. Present market price is Rs.75,000/-. He further highlighted that servicing will be done by CAMPCO only - first service being free and next services will be charged.
Sri.Senthil Anudhan, Scientist-Biochemistry from CPCRI,Vittal made presentation on some of the machines developed for spraying, harvesting and dehusking of Arecnut.
In the afternoon session, discussions were held relating to innovations made by farmers, Scientists, Engineers, and Institutes. Sri.Seetharam Hegde, Bairumbe explained on the Areca harvesting machine and suggested to grow Velvet Bean in the Areca gardens which will not allow weed growth. Sri.V.V.Hegde, Sirsi stated on the machine developed by him using old materials for Areca peeling. Sri.Sooryakanth Bannadka of M/s SKF Industrial Corporation-Mangalore described about the features of the multi utility drier incorporating fuel economy & maximum efficiency which is designed to dry Cloths, Coconut, Arecanut, Rubber, Cardamom, Spices, Dry Fruits, Pappads, etc. and advantageous to all sections of the society. The engineering students of the Centre of Innovation - NITK Suratkal also put forth their innovations on irrigation system, saline water reclamation, dissolution of urea, making bio-fertilizer by coir pith and de-shelling of coconut. Sri.S.R.Hegde opined that Areca processing differs from area to area and hence developed a machine which will also grade Areca according to size with single phase 1.5 HP engine costing Rs.80,000/-. Sri.M.S.Bhat explained about solar drying.
Sri.Konkodi Padmanabha, President opined that the discussions were useful to all concerned and requested improvement on the following:
o The Areca dehusking machine now available has not been improved upto the expectation.
o Regarding irrigation and manure application more studies are to be made.
o Harvesting machine is to be simplified.
o Spraying machine should be developed further so that from the ground level itself we can spray the Areca bunches.
o Need for improvement of milk dairy in the Arecanut farms.
o Feeding fertilizer to the plants should be mechanized.
o Regarding drying of Arecanut, further improvement is required.
o Manpower training has to be done in the Arecanut tree climbing/harvesting, etc.
o As stated by Mr.Srinivas Achar, Areca mill are to be developed in growing areas.
